Riders Caught Between Stability and Lost Flexibility
-

For riders still working as freelancers, the shift is abrupt. Uber Eats has given autónomos 60 days to register with a subcontracted fleet or lose access to the app, with no option for direct employment by the platform itself. How many riders will be absorbed — and on what terms — remains unclear, fueling anxiety across the workforce.
The government has celebrated the move as a victory. Labour Minister Yolanda Díaz said the decision proves that companies must follow the law and estimated tens of thousands of riders could enter formal employment. Among riders, however, opinion is split: some welcome contracts and social security, while others fear fleet work will mean fewer hours, lower pay and the final loss of flexibility that once defined delivery apps in Spain.
