California Moves Against xAI Over Grok Deepfake Abuse
-

xAI is facing escalating legal pressure after the California Attorney General’s Office launched an investigation into reports that its chatbot, Grok, was used to generate nonconsensual sexual imagery involving women and minors. The probe intensified this week when California Attorney General Rob Bonta issued a cease-and-desist letter demanding the immediate halt of deepfake intimate images and child sexual abuse material.
State officials allege that xAI may have enabled large-scale production of nonconsensual explicit content, which they say is being used to harass women and girls online. The company has been given five days to demonstrate concrete steps to stop the activity, underscoring California’s zero-tolerance stance toward CSAM and illegal AI-generated content.
