Wikipedia Turns 25 With New AI Partnerships and a Vision for the Future
-

As part of its 25th anniversary celebration, the Wikimedia Foundation announced a major expansion of partnerships with leading AI and technology companies through its commercial product, Wikimedia Enterprise. Alongside an earlier deal with Google, the foundation revealed new partnerships with Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity. These agreements allow large-scale, high-speed reuse of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia project content, offering tech firms reliable access while helping sustain the nonprofit as its data is increasingly used by AI systems.
The foundation emphasized that this approach goes beyond monetization, supporting Wikipedia’s role as one of the world’s top 10 most-visited websites, with more than 65 million articles across 300+ languages viewed nearly 15 billion times each month. To mark the milestone, Wikimedia also launched a global birthday campaign featuring a behind-the-scenes docuseries on volunteers, a “25 Years of Wikipedia” interactive time capsule narrated in part by founder Jimmy Wales, and a livestreamed celebration across social platforms. As Wikimedia’s leadership noted, even in the age of AI, Wikipedia’s human-powered model remains central to preserving trustworthy, collaborative knowledge for decades to come.
