How a Hotel Stay Turned Into a $5,000 Crypto Loss
-

A crypto user known as The Smart Ape says he lost roughly $5,000 from a hot wallet after spending three days in a hotel — without clicking phishing links or downloading malware. Instead, the loss came from a chain of small mistakes: using open hotel WiFi, talking about crypto holdings in public, and approving what looked like a routine wallet request.
Security firm Hacken analyzed the incident and found the attack likely combined network-level manipulation with subtle social engineering. The case highlights how attackers don’t always need private keys — sometimes, they just wait for one careless approval.
