As Self-Assessment deadlines loom, many UK freelancers are reassessing their relationship with accountants. New research from TaxZap shows that 58% of self-employed workers are considering dropping their accountant, with 14% having already done so—raising questions about whether professional support is easing or adding to January’s tax stress.

High fees topped the list of complaints, followed by confusing forms, missed deadlines, and poor communication. With millions of returns still unfiled and the deadline fast approaching, strained accountant relationships may be a key factor behind growing delays and frustration among sole traders.
