India’s order followed complaints from users and a formal objection by parliamentarian Priyanka Chaturvedi, who highlighted cases where Grok was used to alter images of women to make them appear to be wearing bikinis. These AI-altered images circulated widely, sparking concerns around consent, harassment, and gender-based abuse.
Although X acknowledged and removed some problematic outputs — including sexualized images involving minors — TechCrunch found that other altered images remained accessible at the time of reporting. The episode has intensified scrutiny over how quickly platforms respond once harmful AI outputs are identified.
