A 1992 Computer Virus Changed His Life — 33 Years Later, He Found Its Creator
-

More than three decades after a harmless computer virus altered his career path, cybersecurity pioneer Bernardo Quintero set out to find the anonymous programmer behind it.
The malware, known as Virus Málaga, spread across computers at Málaga’s Polytechnic School in 1992. Tasked with building an antivirus as a student, Quintero discovered a passion for cybersecurity that later led him to found VirusTotal, acquired by Google in 2012.
Earlier this year, driven by nostalgia and gratitude, Quintero reopened the mystery — launching a search that would uncover a long-hidden personal story behind one of Spain’s earliest computer viruses.
