Italy Blocks Meta’s AI Chatbot Ban on WhatsApp

Italy’s Competition Authority (AGCM) has ordered Meta to halt its policy banning third-party AI chatbots on WhatsApp. The move comes amid an investigation into whether Meta is abusing its dominant position by favoring its own AI chatbot.

The AGCM said the ban could harm competition and limit market access for other AI services like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. The policy change, set to take effect in January, would not affect businesses using AI for customer service on WhatsApp.
