How Uzbekistan’s License Plate Cameras Track Millions
-

Uzbekistan’s “intelligence traffic management system,” supplied by Chinese tech company Maxvision, monitors vehicles across major cities like Tashkent, Namangan, and Jizzakh, as well as rural border routes. Cameras capture 4K photos and video of license plates and occupants, sometimes tracking drivers thousands of times a day.The exposed system allows anyone to view a web-based dashboard with zoomed-in images and raw footage of traffic violations. Researchers warn that such lapses demonstrate the dangers of mass surveillance, particularly as countries worldwide, including the U.S., expand their own networks of license plate readers.
