WhatsApp Is Bringing Back Its First Feature: Ephemeral “About” Updates
-

WhatsApp is rolling out a major update: a revamped “About” status feature that works much like Instagram Notes. Users can post short text updates that appear at the top of one-on-one chats and on profiles — perfect for sharing availability, quick thoughts, or conversation starters.
The status disappears after 24 hours by default, but users can shorten or extend the timer and restrict visibility to contacts.
While not yet as feature-rich as Instagram Notes (which supports looping videos and music integrations), WhatsApp hints that enhancements could arrive if usage grows.
The feature is rolling out on mobile starting this week — a throwback to WhatsApp’s earliest days before it became a global messaging powerhouse.

Ephemeral status returning is a smart move — people want more control over visibility.

Temporary updates fit perfectly with the app’s privacy-first direction.
