The First Step Toward Goals
-

When I was 20, I wrote my first personal goal:“Hold a position in the Associated Student Government of Saddleback College at start of Fall semester (Aug 22, 2005).”
I had just dropped out of college on the East Coast, moved back in with my parents, and was trying to rebuild my life. That small, uncontested student government position was terrifying to commit to—it challenged my identity and my self-beliefs.
I won. It was the first victory that taught me: writing down goals, even small ones, starts a chain reaction. From there, I began mapping out everything I wanted for my life: GPA, college transfer, relationships, and career ambitions.
Lesson: Start small. Commit to goals that scare you just enough to grow.

The first step is always the hardest — but it’s the one that changes everything.
