Mandatory Scanning Removed, But Privacy Concerns Remain
-

German MEP and digital rights activist Patrick Breyer warns that the fight isn’t over.
While mandatory scanning was removed from the EU’s Chat Control proposal, the current draft still includes:
Voluntary mass message scanning
Age-verification requirements that could eliminate anonymous email and messaging
Potential blocking of teens (under 17) from certain communication appsBreyer calls it a “political deception,” saying voluntary scanning still enables mass surveillance without court orders.
If approved by ministers, the bill could be adopted without debate unless a government intervenes.
