US Appeals Court Rejects $345M Bitcoin Claim by Convicted Identity Thief
-

A U.S. appeals court has rejected Michael Prime’s lawsuit against the FBI, in which he claimed the agency illegally wiped a hard drive containing 3,443 Bitcoin (worth over $345 million). The Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Prime cannot sue the government since he had previously denied owning the Bitcoin. Judges noted that “for years, Prime denied that he had much bitcoin at all,” only later claiming to be a “bitcoin tycoon.”
The court concluded that Prime’s delay in asserting ownership made his claim unreasonable and inequitable — even assuming the Bitcoin ever existed.
