The European Central Bank (ECB) and President Christine Lagarde support the creation of a unified supervisory body — a “European SEC” — to reduce fragmentation and systemic risks.
Lagarde noted that extending ESMA’s mandate for direct oversight could strengthen the EU’s Capital Markets Union, helping it compete with US markets and improving cross-border efficiency for startups.
