CODA Challenges OpenAI’s Opt-Out Policy, Cites Japan’s Copyright Laws
-

In its statement, CODA acknowledged OpenAI’s outreach to studios and agencies before Sora 2’s release — offering an opt-out from data use — but argued this fails to meet Japan’s legal requirement for prior permission. The association submitted two formal requests:
1️⃣ That Sora 2 not use members’ content without prior approval.
2️⃣ That OpenAI respond transparently to copyright concerns raised by CODA’s member companies.CODA emphasized that Japan’s system does not allow companies to avoid liability through post-use objections, signaling a potential international copyright clash over AI training practices.
