EU Slaps Meta and TikTok Over Digital Services Act Violations

The European Commission found Meta and TikTok in breach of the EU’s Digital Services Act, citing failures to provide researchers with adequate access to public data. Meta’s platforms, Instagram and Facebook, were also criticized for complex reporting processes and “dark patterns” that discourage users from flagging illegal content.

Both companies now face scrutiny that could lead to fines of up to 6% of global annual revenue. Meta disputes the findings, while TikTok highlights tensions between DSA and GDPR compliance.
