DOJ Signals It Won’t Criminalize Writing Code
-

Despite Roman Storm’s partial conviction, the DOJ has indicated it will not pursue a retrial or similar prosecutions against DeFi coders.
Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew Galeotti stated:
“Merely writing code, without ill intent, is not a crime.”
Speaking at the American Innovation Project Summit, Galeotti added that the DOJ should not leave innovators “guessing” about what could lead to prosecution.
This stance offers relief to developers worried about privacy tools and non-custodial DeFi platforms being treated as unlicensed money transmitters.

This decision reassures developers that innovation won’t be punished under vague interpretations.
