A global privacy coalition is urging the Irish government to halt work on a pre-draft bill that would give law enforcement access to encrypted messages. Ryan Polk of the Global Encryption Coalition warned that weakening encryption could increase cybercrime and deter tech businesses from operating in Ireland, home to major EU headquarters like Apple and Meta. The Communications, Interception and Lawful Access Bill is still in the early drafting stage.

Glad to see civil groups standing up. If this bill passes, it could undo years of progress in digital privacy.

Public resistance matters here. The coalition’s voice might be the only thing keeping full encryption alive in the EU.
