ESET’s research links DeceptiveDevelopment to a larger fraud campaign by North Korean IT workers active since at least 2017. Workers secure overseas jobs, funnel salaries back to North Korea, steal internal data, and carry out extortion.

The campaign initially targeted the US, but has shifted focus to Europe, including France, Poland, Ukraine, and Albania. AI tools are increasingly used to create realistic fake profiles and even manipulate live video calls.
