Google Expands AI Scam Detection to India’s Pixel 9 Devices
-

Google is strengthening India’s fight against digital fraud with the rollout of on-device AI scam detection for Pixel 9 smartphones. The feature uses Gemini Nano to analyze calls locally and flag suspicious behavior without recording or sending audio to Google’s servers. It works only for unknown numbers, is off by default, and plays a beep to alert participants.
The launch comes as digital fraud surges nationwide. India recorded 13,516 bank-fraud cases linked to digital transactions in 2024 and an estimated ₹70 billion (≈$789 million) in online-scam losses during the first five months of 2025.
For now, scam detection in India will be limited to Pixel 9 and later models, and only for English-speaking users — a major limitation in a market where Pixel’s share remains under 1% and most users rely on non-English languages. Google says it is working to bring the feature to non-Pixel Android devices but offered no timeline.
