🚨 Musk Tried to Rope Zuckerberg Into $97.4B OpenAI Buyout Attempt — He Said No
-
Elon Musk reportedly sought Mark Zuckerberg’s backing in a February 2025 bid to seize control of OpenAI for $97.4 billion, according to court documents cited by WSJ and Reuters. OpenAI’s board rejected the offer outright.
The filings suggest Musk, along with a consortium of investors, reached out to Zuckerberg about “potential financial arrangements or investments” tied to the takeover.
Meta, however, told the court there’s no evidence of any discussions with Musk about the OpenAI bid. Both companies declined to comment; Musk did not respond to requests.
️ WSJ noted that any collaboration would have been “a rare alignment” between Musk and Zuckerberg, who have spent years sniping at each other over AI, social media, and even once teased a physical cage fight in 2023.
️ Musk’s takeover attempt came amid his ongoing lawsuit against OpenAI over its pivot to a for-profit structure. OpenAI countersued, accusing him of harassment and “bad-faith actions,” including what it described as a sham buyout attempt that harmed the company.
This latest revelation adds a new chapter to the Musk–Zuck rivalry: a multibillion-dollar “what if” that almost bridged their feud — but instead deepened the courtroom drama surrounding OpenAI.
