As surveillance moves into the wearable era, privacy advocates argue that cryptography, not regulation, will decide the balance of power.

The most promising tool? Zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs. These allow systems to verify information — like age or identity — without exposing the underlying data.

“In a world where AR glasses and AI assistants capture every detail of our lives, ZK-proofs let us stay in control,” said Dr. Elena Park, a cryptography researcher.

Big Tech continues to promise convenience in exchange for intimacy. But with lawsuits mounting over data misuse and consumers demanding more transparency, experts say cryptography could become a default layer of digital sovereignty.

“Surveillance is inevitable,” Park added. “The choice is whether we become passive subjects, or active participants in controlling our data.”
