DOE’s Proposed Funding Cuts Could Hit EV Startups and Automakers Hard
-

The U.S. Department of Energy is reportedly planning to cancel more than $500 million in clean energy grants, potentially affecting dozens of startups and major automakers including Ford, GM, Stellantis, and Daimler Trucks North America, according to an internal document reviewed by TechCrunch.
These proposed cuts come in addition to the $7.5 billion in contract cancellations the Trump administration announced last week, targeting programs under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Among the largest awards facing cuts are:
$189 million to Brimstone, for building a low-carbon materials plant.
A nine-figure grant to Anovion, which is developing domestic synthetic graphite production for EV batteries.
If implemented, the move could disrupt EV supply chains, manufacturing transitions, and clean tech innovation, hitting both established automakers and emerging climate tech startups.
