Microsoft Expands Solar Push With 100 MW Deal in Japan
-

Microsoft has signed a 20-year agreement with Shizen Energy to purchase 100 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity in Japan — its latest step toward powering its growing global data center network with renewable energy.
The deal spans four solar projects — one operational and three under construction — and supports Microsoft’s $2.9 billion investment to expand compute infrastructure in Japan over the next year.
Solar power remains a favorite among major tech firms due to its low cost, rapid deployment, and ability to supply energy before full completion. Since the start of 2025, Microsoft has contracted over 1 gigawatt of new solar capacity worldwide, reinforcing its ambition to achieve 100% renewable energy for its operations.
