Ryanair Staff to Get Bonuses for Catching Oversized Bags — CEO Says It's About Fairness
-
Looks like Ryanair is tightening the screws again — this time on oversized cabin bags.
According to Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary, the airline is planning to increase staff bonuses for flagging passengers who try to sneak on oversized carry-ons. The move, he says, is meant to crack down on rule-breakers and keep boarding smooth for everyone else. Source: BBC.
🧳 How It Works:As of July 2025, Ryanair staff earn €1.50 per oversized bag they catch (approx. 137 RUB as of July 22, 2025). The exact amount of the planned bonus increase hasn't been disclosed yet. Passengers caught with non-compliant bags face a fine of €86 (approx. 7,878 RUB) — though this may vary based on destination and travel date.
Even though only about 0.1% of passengers try to bring oversized luggage onboard, O’Leary says these travelers slow down boarding and act unfairly toward others who follow the rules.
What's Allowed for Free?
Ryanair's current cabin bag policy (as per the BBC):
One small carry-on item per passenger Max weight: 10 kg Max dimensions: 40 x 20 x 25 cm
Anything beyond that? Get ready to pay — or get caught by a bonus-hunting crew member
What Do You Think?
Is this just Ryanair being Ryanair? Or is it a fair way to enforce the rules and speed up boarding?
Personally, I get it — but €86 feels steep for a bag that's a couple of centimeters too big. Either way, time to measure twice, board once.
