Anthropic Refuses Pentagon Demands Over Military Use of AI
-

A major clash is unfolding between Anthropic and the United States Department of Defense over how artificial intelligence can be used by the military.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei refused to allow the company’s AI models to be used for mass domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons without human oversight, setting strict limits in contract negotiations with the Pentagon.
The dispute escalated after the US government pushed for access to the technology for any “lawful use.” When Anthropic declined, the administration of Donald Trump ordered federal agencies to phase out the company’s tools and labeled Anthropic a potential “supply-chain risk.”
Meanwhile, rival OpenAI announced it had reached an agreement allowing its models to be deployed in classified military settings, sparking debate within the tech community about the role of AI in warfare.
The standoff highlights one of the biggest questions facing the AI industry today: who should control how powerful AI systems are used in military operations.
