AI-Powered Flood Forecasting Could Help Countries Without Weather Infrastructure
-

Flash floods are among the world’s deadliest weather disasters, killing more than 5,000 people every year, but predicting them has always been extremely difficult. Google’s new AI forecasting system aims to change that by using machine learning and global weather data to estimate the probability of floods, even in regions where traditional meteorological infrastructure is limited.
While the model currently identifies flood risks across large 20-square-kilometer areas and isn’t as precise as local radar-based systems, its real value lies in accessibility. The technology is designed to help countries that lack expensive weather-monitoring equipment, giving governments and emergency responders earlier warnings and potentially saving thousands of lives during sudden flooding events.
