AI Leaders Back Anthropic as Legal Fight With US Government Escalates
-

Support is growing for Anthropic as it challenges the US government’s decision to block its AI technology from federal use. More than 30 AI engineers and scientists from companies including OpenAI and Google filed a legal brief supporting the firm, warning that punishing a leading American AI company could harm the country’s competitiveness in the global artificial intelligence race.
The legal dispute stems from a decision by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to designate Anthropic as a supply chain risk after the company refused to remove safety limits from its AI model, Claude. Anthropic says it has never tested Claude for military uses such as autonomous weapons and does not believe the system is safe for those purposes, arguing that its restrictions are essential for responsible AI development.
