Discord’s Age Verification Plan Sparks Privacy Concerns
-

Discord is preparing to roll out mandatory age verification by the second half of 2026, prompting concerns among users wary of uploading government IDs or completing facial scans. While the company says roughly 90% of users won’t need to verify their age, adults who want access to age-restricted channels or unblur sensitive content will be required to confirm their status. The move follows a prior data breach that exposed IDs belonging to around 70,000 users, intensifying skepticism around data security.
Discord says the policy aims to create a safer environment for younger users, with all accounts defaulting to “teen-appropriate” settings unless verified otherwise. After public backlash, the company delayed the rollout to late 2026, giving users more time to adjust. Still, the update has motivated many to explore alternative platforms that place a stronger emphasis on privacy and user control.
