Pentagon Pressures Anthropic Over Military Access to AI Model
-

Anthropic is facing mounting pressure from the U.S. Department of Defense after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly demanded unrestricted military access to the company’s AI model. According to reports, Anthropic has until Friday to comply or risk being labeled a “supply chain risk” — a designation typically reserved for foreign adversaries — or facing action under the Defense Production Act (DPA). The DPA grants the president authority to compel companies to prioritize national defense production, a power previously used during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has maintained firm boundaries around the company’s AI use policies, stating it will not allow its systems to be used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. Pentagon officials argue that military technology usage should be governed by U.S. law — not private company guardrails. If invoked in this context, use of the DPA would mark a significant expansion of its modern application, escalating tensions between federal authority and AI developers.
