Leadership Exodus at xAI as Musk Shifts Focus to the Moon
-

Musk’s lunar ambitions come at a turbulent moment for xAI. Two co-founders, Tony Wu and Jimmy Ba, announced their departures this week, bringing the total number of founding members who have left to six out of twelve. The exits have been described as amicable, especially with a potential SpaceX IPO reportedly targeting a $1.5 trillion valuation later this year.
At the same time, Musk appears to be pivoting SpaceX’s long-term vision. After years of positioning Mars as the ultimate destination, he recently stated that building a “self-growing city” on the moon could happen in half the time it would take to colonize Mars. The shift is significant — particularly for a company that has yet to send a mission to the moon — and suggests Musk sees near-term strategic value in lunar infrastructure over distant planetary colonization.
