Grok’s ‘Spicy Mode’ Puts Global Pressure on xAI
-

Much of the backlash centers on Grok’s explicit “spicy” mode, which critics say enabled the creation of abusive deepfake content. While xAI introduced some restrictions on image-editing features earlier in the week, regulators in multiple countries — including Japan, Canada, and the United Kingdom — have opened their own investigations. Malaysia and Indonesia have gone further, temporarily blocking access to the platform altogether.
The controversy reflects a broader reckoning across the tech industry as free generative AI tools fuel a surge in nonconsensual sexual material online. Lawmakers in the United States have also stepped in, sending letters to companies such as Alphabet, Meta, TikTok, Snap, Reddit, and X, pressing them to explain how they plan to curb the spread of sexualized deepfakes before the problem grows further.
