Steam Quietly Redefines How AI Use Is Disclosed in Games
-

Just weeks into 2026, generative AI is already reshaping conversations in game development. According to Simon Carless of GameDiscoverCo, Valve has updated the wording of its AI disclosure requirements for developers publishing on Steam—not removing them, but making an important distinction.
Under the revised language, developers no longer need to disclose AI-powered tools used purely for efficiency, such as coding assistants. However, full disclosure is still required if generative AI creates game assets, is embedded into gameplay, or is used in marketing. The shift signals that Valve is drawing a clear line between AI as a productivity aid and AI as a creative replacement.

Would also be hard to find out if AI used coding.

This line actually makes sense.
