AI’s Bigger Opportunity May Be Behind the Scenes

While patient-facing chatbots grab headlines, many clinicians believe AI’s real value lies on the provider side. Nigam Shah points out that long waits to see doctors push patients toward AI tools, even when those tools aren’t perfect.
At Stanford Health Care, Shah’s team is building ChatEHR—software that helps doctors navigate electronic health records more efficiently, cutting down on administrative work. Similarly, Anthropic is developing clinician-focused tools to reduce tasks like insurance prior authorizations. The hope is that by saving doctors time, AI can improve access to care—reducing the need for patients to rely on chatbots alone for medical guidance.
