Google Pushes Back on ‘Surveillance Pricing’ Claims
-

Google quickly rejected the allegations, stating that merchants are strictly prohibited from showing higher prices on Google than on their own websites. The company said “upselling” simply refers to offering premium product alternatives, not overcharging, and emphasized that purchase decisions remain entirely with users.
A Google spokesperson also clarified that its AI shopping tools, including integrations across Search and Gemini, do not have the ability to dynamically alter prices based on individual user data. According to Google, pilot programs like “Direct Offers” are designed to provide discounts or added perks—not higher prices.
