“You Can’t Stop Bitchat”: Open-Source Resistance Grows
-

Following the regulator’s comments, Bitchat developer Calle responded defiantly, saying the app is designed to be censorship-resistant. He encouraged Ugandan developers to contribute to open-source software, arguing that decentralized code cannot be meaningfully shut down by state authorities.
Data shared by Calle shows more than 400,000 Ugandans have already downloaded the app. Because Bitchat requires no accounts, phone numbers, or servers, supporters believe it could remain functional even if authorities disrupt traditional communication infrastructure.
