Lithuania Cracks Down on Unlicensed Crypto Firms Starting January 1
-

Lithuania is set to enforce one of Europe’s strictest crypto regulations, targeting unlicensed digital asset firms starting next week. The central bank has warned that platforms onboarding users or handling crypto without MiCA authorization after December 31 will be considered illegal.
While over 370 firms are registered in Lithuania, only about 120 are actively operating, and fewer than 10% have applied for MiCA licenses. Non-compliant companies face fines, blocked websites, and potential criminal liability—including prison terms up to four years.
Authorities are urging firms planning to close operations to notify clients and transfer assets properly, ensuring an orderly wind-down.
