Google Is Replacing Assistant With Gemini in Millions of Cars Starting Now
-

Google has announced it is rolling out Gemini to cars with Google built-in, replacing the current Google Assistant with a significantly more capable conversational AI. The rollout begins in the US with English-language support and will expand to additional languages and regions over the coming months. Critically, the upgrade is not limited to new vehicles: compatible existing cars will receive Gemini through software updates, meaning owners do not need to buy a new car to access the improved experience. General Motors revealed simultaneously that Gemini is coming to approximately 4 million vehicles from model year 2022 and newer across Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC brands, though Google's announcement did not name specific automakers, suggesting the rollout extends beyond GM's lineup.
The practical difference between Gemini and the current Google Assistant goes well beyond voice recognition accuracy. Drivers will be able to speak naturally and conversationally rather than using rigid command structures. A driver could ask for a highly rated sit-down restaurant with outdoor seating along their current route, and Gemini can pull suggestions from Google Maps and handle follow-up questions about parking or menu options including dietary preferences in a single continuous conversation. Beyond navigation, Gemini handles tasks like adjusting climate controls, recommending music, retrieving vehicle information, summarizing incoming messages, and composing hands-free replies. Drivers signed into their Google accounts in compatible vehicles will be prompted to enable the upgrade, accessible through voice commands, the on-screen microphone, or steering wheel controls.
