Nokia’s Parent HMD Pulls Back from the U.S. — Tariffs Strike Again?
-
Welp… looks like another tech player is tapping out of the U.S. market. Finnish company HMD — yeah, the folks behind Nokia phones — just announced they’re scaling down operations in the States due to what they called “complex geopolitical and economic conditions.”Translation?
According to The Verge, that’s a polite way of saying: “Thanks, Trump.”
What’s Actually Happening?
🛑 HMD isn’t officially saying “we’re out,” but: Their U.S. online store is down Product pages show no buying options 📦 The company promises to honor warranties and repairs, so current users aren’t totally abandoned. 🤷 No word on layoffs yet, but HMD says they’re “ready to support” affected U.S. staff (whatever that means).
The Tariff Drama
Back in April 2025, President Trump signed an executive order slapping up to 50% tariffs on goods from 185 countries. He gave a few lucky nations a 90-day window to negotiate, then in July delayed the start date to August 1, 2025.
Now, it seems companies like HMD have done the math… and the U.S. market just isn’t worth the squeeze.
Nokia, we barely knew ya (again).
