AI Boom Drives Massive Energy Shift Toward Natural Gas
-

The AI boom is triggering a new wave of infrastructure investment, with major tech companies rapidly securing energy supply to power data centers. Microsoft is working with Chevron and Engine No. 1 on a natural gas plant in Texas that could reach 5 gigawatts, while Google and Crusoe are developing a 933 MW facility. Meta is also expanding its Louisiana data center with multiple gas plants totaling 7.46 GW—enough to power an entire U.S. state.
This surge reflects how AI workloads are driving unprecedented energy demand, especially in regions rich in natural gas. However, the rapid expansion has already created bottlenecks, with turbine shortages pushing prices up significantly and delivery timelines stretching to years, indicating that infrastructure constraints are becoming a key factor in scaling AI globally.
