The Giving Pledge Is Losing Momentum
-

In 2010, Warren Buffett and Bill Gates launched the The Giving Pledge, asking the world’s richest individuals to commit to donating at least half their wealth during their lifetime or after death. At the time, the idea captured the spirit of an era when tech fortunes were growing rapidly and philanthropy was seen as part of that success.
But participation has slowed sharply. After 113 families signed in the first five years, only four new signers joined in 2024, according to reports.
At the same time, wealth inequality has continued to widen: the top 1% of U.S. households now hold roughly as much wealth as the bottom 90% combined, while global billionaire wealth has surged to $18.3 trillion.
The slowdown raises questions about whether voluntary pledges alone can meaningfully shape how massive modern fortunes are distributed.
