Bluesky Integrates First Native End-to-End Encrypted Messenger
-

Decentralized social network Bluesky has integrated end-to-end encrypted messaging through startup Germ Network, making Germ DM the first private messenger that can launch natively inside the Bluesky app. The integration allows users to add a badge to their profiles so others can initiate encrypted chats directly, without leaving the platform’s ecosystem.
Unlike traditional Big Tech platforms, Bluesky runs on the AT Protocol, enabling third-party developers to build features at the protocol layer. Germ leverages Messaging Layer Security (MLS), a standard approved by the Internet Engineering Task Force, to ensure messages cannot be decrypted — even by Germ or Bluesky themselves. The feature works through an iOS App Clip that authenticates users via their ATProto handle, highlighting how open social ecosystems can evolve through community-built innovation rather than centralized control.
