Instagram tests more user control as subscriptions loom
-

Instagram’s Close Friends opt-out feature is part of a broader push by Meta to give users more control over how they share and interact, as the company explores new subscription offerings.
Meta recently confirmed it plans to test paid subscriptions across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. While official details remain limited, leaked information suggests premium Instagram features could include unlimited audience lists, visibility into who doesn’t follow you back, and the ability to view Stories anonymously.
Notably, Snapchat already allows users to remove themselves from private Stories, putting pressure on Instagram to match similar privacy controls.
Meta says core features will remain free, while subscriptions will bundle optional tools for power users. As with many internal prototypes, it’s still unclear when—or if—these features will roll out publicly.
