Google’s latest AI-focused Search overhaul is already driving some users toward alternatives like DuckDuckGo. After Google announced at I/O 2026 that Search would increasingly rely on AI agents capable of answering questions, performing tasks, and monitoring information in the background, backlash quickly followed across social media and tech communities.

DuckDuckGo says it has now seen a major spike in growth. The company reported that US app installs rose 18.1% week-over-week between May 20 and May 25, with daily growth peaking at 30.5% on May 25. On iOS, installs grew even faster, averaging 33% week-over-week and reaching a peak of nearly 70%.

A growing number of users appear frustrated by Google’s increasing AI integration, especially concerns around inaccurate AI-generated answers, loss of control over search experiences, and the broader impact AI search could have on the open web. DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weinberg criticized Google’s direction, arguing that users should have the ability to choose how much AI they want integrated into their search experience rather than having it forced by default.
