Tether and the government of Georgia are preparing to launch GELT, a new stablecoin pegged to the Georgian lari under the country’s recently introduced digital asset framework. The project aims to support cross-border payments, digital commerce, and modern financial infrastructure across the region.

Georgia’s central bank already introduced stablecoin regulations in March 2026, requiring:
• Full reserve backing
• External auditor verification
• AML compliance
• Formal issuer approval and oversight

The framework positions Georgia as one of the more proactive crypto jurisdictions in Eastern Europe. While details about reserve custody and redemption rights are still pending, the partnership signals growing government interest in regulated stablecoin ecosystems beyond the US dollar.

GELT would join Tether’s expanding lineup of non-dollar stablecoins, including products tied to the Mexican peso, offshore Chinese yuan, and the upcoming UAE dirham.
