The era of a single full-time job as the default career structure is ending, and the leaders at Fortune's Workplace Innovation Summit are starting to speak about that shift matter-of-factly rather than as a distant possibility. Upwork CEO Hayden Brown described the current moment as one where workers splitting themselves across three or four different income streams is simply the new reality for a growing segment of the workforce. Far from being a sign of economic distress, she framed it as a model that gives workers freedom, flexibility, and genuine control over the direction of their careers in a way that traditional employment increasingly cannot match, particularly for people in fields where the skills landscape is shifting quickly.

WeWork CEO John Santora added a workplace flexibility dimension to the conversation, noting that giving employees more flexibility leads to greater accountability rather than less. His company requires in-office attendance three to four days per week but builds in room for the realities of life, with his reasoning being straightforward: if you do not offer flexibility for things like medical appointments and family responsibilities, workers will find an employer who does. The convergence of these perspectives from leaders running a commercial real estate company and a freelance marketplace reflects how broadly the expectation of rigid employment structures has broken down across industries. For workers entering the market today, particularly those in Gen Z who are already navigating AI-driven uncertainty, the message from both executives is that adaptability and the willingness to build skills on your own terms may matter more than finding a single stable employer and staying there.
