Google announced Gmail Live at its I/O 2026 developer conference, a new conversational AI feature powered by Gemini that allows users to ask natural language questions about the contents of their inbox rather than relying on traditional keyword search. Instead of trying to remember which email contained a hotel room number, a dentist appointment time, or a school event detail, users can simply ask Gmail directly and receive a specific answer drawn from their messages. Gmail Live can handle follow-up questions, understands nuances between similar topics, and can infer which people or events a user is referring to even when they are not explicitly named in the query.

The feature is being positioned as an addition to traditional Gmail search rather than a replacement for it, a deliberate choice that reflects lessons Google appears to have learned from the backlash that followed its AI-powered overhaul of Google Photos search, which was later rolled back after widespread user complaints. Gmail Live will roll out to Google AI Ultra subscribers this summer, with the broader AI Inbox experience expanding beyond Ultra subscribers to reach Google AI Pro and Plus subscribers as well. Gmail is also gaining several other new capabilities at the same time, including ready-to-send draft suggestions, instant file access, and the ability to mark individual tasks as done directly within the inbox. Similar voice-powered functionality is also coming to Google Keep, the company's to-do list app, extending the conversational AI experience across more of Google's productivity suite.
