Google announced at its annual I/O developer conference on Tuesday the launch of Pics, a new AI-powered design and image generation app built natively into Google Workspace. The app is designed to be accessible to users with no design skills or editing experience, allowing anyone from teachers to small business owners to generate social media graphics, invitations, marketing materials, and mock-ups using simple text prompts. Pics is powered by Google's Nano Banana 2 model, which the company says supports precise text rendering, real-world knowledge, and detailed visual output, with Gemini powering the editing layer that makes every element in a generated design fully adjustable. What sets Pics apart from straightforward image generators is its approach to editing.

Rather than requiring users to rewrite an entire prompt every time they want to change a small detail, Pics allows users to click directly on the part of an image they want to modify and leave a comment, similar to leaving feedback in Google Docs. Users can also make direct manual edits, such as changing the time on a party invitation, without writing a new prompt at all. The app launches to a group of testers at I/O and will roll out to Google AI Ultra subscribers this summer. The announcement puts Google directly in competition with Canva and AI-native design tools like Anthropic's Claude Design, signaling that AI-powered visual creation is rapidly becoming one of the most contested product categories in the productivity software market.
