The lawsuit claims Sony is positioned to profit twice: first through the higher prices consumers paid for PS5 consoles after tariffs were introduced in 2025, and again through the refund process now available following the Supreme Court's ruling that IEEPA tariffs were unconstitutional. The suit argues that all consumers who purchased a PlayStation 5 at the increased price during the tariff period are owed refunds for the additional cost they absorbed.

Sony has not yet publicly responded to the lawsuit, and it remains unclear how much affected PlayStation buyers could expect to receive if the case succeeds or if Sony voluntarily agrees to pass refunds along. The company has faced a string of class action lawsuits in recent years covering PlayStation Store pricing, controller drift, and allegations of monopolistic practices through its platform, with outcomes ranging from dismissal to a recent preliminary $7.8 million settlement in the platform monopoly case. The tariff lawsuit adds to that list at a time when Sony is already navigating significant consumer relations pressure around hardware and subscription pricing increases.
