The Solayer Visa card launch is the latest in a wave of stablecoin-linked payment card announcements that has accelerated dramatically over the past six months, with crypto companies and traditional payment networks simultaneously building toward the same infrastructure vision from different directions. OKX launched a Mastercard-linked payment card for European users through regulated issuer Monavate in January, allowing verified customers to spend USDC and Paxos' USDG. MetaMask expanded its Mastercard-linked crypto payment card across the full United States including New York in February, enabling spending from self-custodial wallets. Visa and Stripe-owned Bridge expanded their stablecoin card program to 18 countries in March and announced plans to reach more than 100 countries by end of 2026, simultaneously testing stablecoin settlement through Visa's pilot infrastructure. That same month, Mastercard agreed to acquire stablecoin infrastructure company BVNK in a deal valued at up to $1.8 billion, giving the card network direct ownership of infrastructure that enables stablecoin payments across blockchain networks in more than 130 countries.

The pattern across all these announcements is the same: traditional payment rails — Visa and Mastercard — are becoming the settlement layer through which stablecoin balances become spendable at existing merchants without requiring those merchants to change anything about how they accept payments. The stablecoin holder gets dollar-equivalent spending power globally; the merchant receives familiar fiat settlement; the conversion happens in the middle through infrastructure that neither party needs to understand or interact with directly. This is the architecture that makes stablecoin payment adoption tractable at scale — it does not require merchants to adopt new payment terminals or consumers to educate retailers about cryptocurrency. It simply makes stablecoins work everywhere that Visa or Mastercard already works, which is effectively everywhere.
